Media, Mediated
This project dramatizes the relationships between disparate visual art mediums. It includes small groups of closely-related works that stem from the same raw materials.
Each making process starts with brief fragments of analog film footage. Individual frames are blown-up for use in digital paintings; and short loops are made for software-based works such as websites and data installations.
The filmic raw materials are editing room detritus and non-narrative footage: pieces of leader, reel end notations, countdowns, damaged or surplus shots. These often visually rich segments are given a variety of new, post-cinematic digital forms.
And at the centre of these works is the inclusion of chance, representing nature, as the artist’s partner in the making processes. The websites and installations include complex compositions of randomization algorithms that ‘play’ the visuals as though they’re musical phrases – improvising within motif and montage structures – they complete themselves before the viewer’s eyes.
Media, Mediated includes several series: Countdown; EXPOSED; MOUNTAINS, REPETITION; and Elma, Manitoba. This project began in 2012 and is on-going.
